📬 New Idea: The Athens Scoop Quarterly

Remember when getting something in the mail actually meant something? Not a bill, not a credit card offer. Something someone made for you that you could hold onto, stick on the fridge, or leave on the coffee table.

I want to bring that back.

The Athens Scoop Quarterly.

Once a season, you get an envelope at your door with:

  • An insider letter with news I haven't published yet

  • An exclusive deal from a local Athens business

  • Athens-themed stickers from a local artist

  • A seasonal guide (best patios, date night spots, new openings)

  • Priority access to the next Athens Scoop event

  • And more (send me your ideas!)

Price: $25. Ships every season. Not a membership, cancel whenever.

I need to know if anyone would actually use this before I set it up though.

🍝 Modern Italian in a Converted Factory

Nestled inside the Rivet House boutique hotel on Athens' northside, Osteria Olio brings elevated Italian dining to the Classic City with a seasonal, locally sourced menu. Handmade pastas, wood-fired pizzas and creative cocktails are served in a beautifully renovated industrial space with exposed beams, charred cedar walls and a lush patio with poured-concrete banquettes. The meatballs and ricotta fritters are standouts, and the weekend brunch is worth a reservation. It's the kind of place that makes you forget you're five minutes from downtown Athens.

🗳️ Athens Mayoral Race Heats Up With Dueling Endorsements

The Gist: An association of Black pastors endorsed Commissioner Dexter Fisher for Athens mayor this week, while rival candidate Tim Denson picked up endorsements from Commissioner Melissa Link and the Democratic Socialists of America. Five candidates are competing in the May 19 election to replace term-limited Mayor Kelly Girtz.

Why It Matters: The endorsements signal how the race is splitting between establishment and progressive coalitions heading into the final stretch.

☕ Hendershot's Saved: New Owners Will Keep Athens' Beloved Coffee and Music Venue Open

The Gist: After Seth Hendershot announced earlier this month that the Prince Avenue coffee shop, bar and music venue would close March 31 due to burnout, a last-minute save has arrived. At the monthly Jazz Jam on March 19, Hendershot revealed the business has been purchased by local buyers who plan to preserve the space. The new owners will be introduced at the farewell festival on March 31, which will feature all-day music, poetry and art from 7:30 a.m. to midnight.

Why It Matters: After 15 years as one of the most important creative hubs in Athens, Hendershot's gets to keep its doors open under new ownership.

What's Next: Head to Hendershot's on 3/31 for Seth's final day festival and to meet the new owners.

⛽ Georgia Gas Tax Suspended for 60 Days

The Gist: Gov. Kemp signed HB 1199 on March 20, suspending the state's 33-cent-per-gallon gas tax through May 19. The move responds to gas prices spiking over $1/gallon since the U.S.-Israel war in Iran began on Feb. 28. A separate bill sends income tax rebates of $250 (single) to $500 (joint filers) to Georgia taxpayers.

Why It Matters: It'll take a few days for prices to drop at local pumps, but Athens drivers should start seeing savings this week.
