  • 🦪 Athens' Favorite Neighborhood Oyster Bar

  • 🏗️ Athens Extends Data Center Moratorium

🦪 Athens' Favorite Neighborhood Oyster Bar

Tucked into a cozy spot on Prince Ave, Seabear Oyster Bar is the kind of place locals quietly guard for themselves, and for good reason. From the creative team behind The National, it merges impeccably fresh, rotating oysters with inventive small plates like Parker House rolls drenched in brown butter, crispy fried clam strips, and a cult-favorite lobster roll: all sourced from sustainable, seasonal purveyors. Whether you're popping in for happy hour Negroni slushies at the outdoor counter or settling in for a full evening of seafood and cocktails, the intimate, unassuming vibe makes it equally perfect for a casual weeknight bite or a slow, lingering dinner.

🗳️ Big Money Flows Into Athens Mayoral Race

The Gist: Mayoral candidate Dexter Fisher has raised over $59,000 for his campaign, more than double the next closest candidate. Tim Denson trails at $17,414. Five candidates are expected to qualify before the Friday deadline for the May 19 ballot.

Why It Matters: Local elections shape everything from zoning to policing, and how campaigns are funded tells you a lot about who's at the table.

🏛️ Laken Riley's Father Files $1M Wrongful Death Lawsuit

The Gist: Jason Riley has filed a $1 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, nearly two years after his daughter, a 22-year-old nursing student, was killed while jogging on UGA's campus.

Why It Matters: The lawsuit raises pointed questions about campus safety and institutional accountability for students and the broader Athens community.

🏗️ Athens Extends Data Center Moratorium

The Gist: Community members packed City Hall as the mayor and Athens-Clarke County Commission voted to extend the moratorium on data centers and approved amendments to related code language.

Why It Matters: The vote reflects growing concern among residents about energy use, land impact, and community character as data center proposals pop up across Georgia.
