🍽️ New Idea: Athens Scoop Couples Dinner Night

Remember when a date night actually felt like a date night? Not another Friday on the couch, or an impromptu dinner out. Something planned for you, where the only decision you and your partner have to make is who drives.

I want to make that easy.

Athens Scoop Couples Dinner Night.

I want to get 12 couples a seat at one of Athens' best restaurants for a night designed entirely around date night:

  • A custom prix fixe menu the chef builds just for the night

  • A welcome drink when you walk in

  • Curated seating so it actually feels like a date, not a banquet

  • A small surprise from a local Athens business at every table

  • And more (send me your ideas!)

Ticket price upfront that covers everything. A fully premium event. Capped at 12 couples so it stays intimate.

I need to know if anyone would actually book this before I set it up though.

πŸ— Southern Comfort Across From The Arch

Tucked into a renovated downtown space directly across from UGA's iconic Arch, The Place is a family-owned Southern spot run by brothers and UGA grads Alan and Ryan Pope. The menu leans on family recipes given a modern twist, with chicken & waffles, Gouda grits, hand-pressed burgers, and a rotating list of meat-and-three plates. Brick walls, wood floors, and old Broad Street photos create a vibe that's just as good for a leisurely Sunday brunch as a quick downtown lunch.

πŸ‘“ Adams Optics Just Moved to a New Downtown Athens Location

Jim Adams opened his first shop on Clayton Street in 1976. A few years back, rising rents pushed him around the corner to Jackson Street. Now, fifty years after he started, he's finally back on Clayton.

Adams Optics is known around Athens for one of the best frame selections downtown, including Italian designer styles and name-brand options you'd expect to pay a lot more for somewhere else. Jim, Amy, and the team will help you find a pair that actually fits your face.

And after five decades, his prices still haven't budged: $99 for frames and single-vision lenses, $149 for bifocals, $249 for progressives. The average pair anywhere else starts around $350.

πŸ“š Avid Bookshop Closing Its Storefront After Nearly 15 Years

Owner Janet Geddis announced last Saturday that the beloved indie bookstore on Barber Street will permanently close its physical doors on Sunday, April 26, citing burnout and her health. Avid will keep operating online at avidbookshop.com and Bookshop.org, with occasional book clubs and events at other Athens venues.

Why it matters: Avid has been a cultural anchor of the Athens literary scene since 2011. Locals have one last weekend to browse the shelves and grab discounted store fixtures, supplies, and furniture.

🏘️ Envision Athens Tapped to Run Affordable Housing Trust Fund

The Athens-Clarke County Commission is likely to hand its multimillion-dollar affordable housing trust fund to nonprofit Envision Athens, on a consultant's recommendation. The county can't run the fund directly because of the state constitution's "gratuities clause," and other nonprofits considered had conflicts or capacity limits.

Why it matters: This sets up the entity that will actually decide how local affordable housing dollars get spent for years to come.

🎢 Aldean and Bryan Reunite at Sanford Stadium This Weekend

Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, both Georgia natives, return to Sanford Stadium Saturday for Live Between the Hedges, the first concert at the stadium since Aldean's Night Train show in 2013. Zach Top and Lauren Alaina open. Tickets range from $68.50 to $591.

Why it matters: It's the biggest concert weekend Athens has seen in over a decade, with downtown traffic and parking impacts to plan around.

A note from Andrew

Athens Scoop is at 8,000 subscribers and sponsor revenue is growing. I need a partner on the sales side.

Not hiring an employee. Looking for a commission-only sales partner with an existing book of Athens business relationships. Ideal fit: you're already in B2B sales somewhere in Athens (agency, print, insurance, merchant services, hospitality, whatever), you know local business owners, and you want uncapped commission on a side book that complements your day job.

Structure:

  • 20% recurring commission on sponsor revenue, paid monthly

  • You bring relationships and close deals. I handle fulfillment and billing.

  • No hours, no quotas, no base.

  • Top performer could add meaningful four-figure monthly income.

If that sounds like you, fill out this 2-minute form: https://forms.gle/ooPUktqr4Jw3JxxS7

I'll reach out within 48 hours to anyone who's a fit.

Andrew
