About Creature Comforts Downtown Taproom and Brewery

Creature Comforts opened its downtown taproom on W Hancock Avenue in April 2014, and within a few years it had become one of the most respected craft breweries in the Southeast. Founded by David Stein, Adam Beauchamp, Katie Beauchamp, Derek Imes, Blake Tyers, and Chris Herron, the brewery brought serious brewing talent to Athens. Stein had been experimenting with recipes at Twain's brewpub in Decatur, and Beauchamp came from Sweetwater Brewing in Atlanta. CEO Chris Herron left a finance role at Diageo to bet on Athens, and the bet paid off. The brewery's flagship Tropicalia IPA is practically the official beer of Athens. It is a fruit forward, balanced IPA that converts even people who think they do not like IPAs. Beyond Tropicalia, the lineup includes a rotating cast of seasonal and specialty releases that keep beer enthusiasts coming back to see what is new on tap. The quality across the board is remarkably consistent. The taproom itself is housed in the former Snow Tire Co. building, and the team preserved the historic exterior while adding contemporary design elements inside. The result is a space that feels authentically Athens: industrial bones, creative spirit, and a casual energy that welcomes everyone from beer nerds to people who just want a cold one on a warm afternoon. Creature Comforts has since expanded its production capacity significantly. The beer was even featured in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame. But the downtown taproom remains the essential experience. Walk in, order a pour, and see why this brewery put Athens on the national craft beer map.

We took a short 10-minute walk from our hotel and headed in. When we arrived, we were informed we could place our order at either the inside or outside bar. We decided to go inside and check it out. This spot really feels like the beer mecca of Athens, Georgia, UGA shirts everywhere and we could tell we were in a college town. We looked over the full menu, ordered our beers, and decided to check out the outdoor patio area. It was game day and packed out there. We couldn't really find a good seat so we went back in where there was plenty of seating. Inside, there were big screens everywhere, especially one massive screen in the main area, perfect for watching the game. There were two bars and plenty of space if you wanted another beer. Everything was super clean and well-maintained, with staff constantly scanning the room and clearing empty glasses and trash quickly. There’s not too much to say about this place. Overall, it’s easy to see why this place is considered the mecca of UGA football and the Athens’ beer community.

We were asked for our credit card at the “host” desk as soon as we walked in. Commercial big business vibe. Plenty of seating. For a brewery, their other drink options exceeded their beer options. A lot of hazy IPA options, no wheat or stout option today.

Good brewery! I’ve visited a couple times and it never disappoints. Creature Comforts is one of the Georgia big four along with Terrapin, Sweetwater, and Monday Night. I never order anything I can find in stores. Good location, friendly staff, and a solid mojo. Creature Comforts and Normaltown are the spots to visit when in Athens.
