Downtown Athens

Downtown Athens is where the city's identity lives. The area stretches roughly from Dougherty Street on the north to the UGA campus on the south, with Pulaski Street and Foundry Street marking the western and eastern edges. Within that compact grid, you will find more than 80 bars, dozens of restaurants, the most important music venues in the Southeast, and a creative energy that has been attracting artists, musicians, and entrepreneurs since the 1970s.

The streets tell the story. W Clayton Street is the dining corridor, home to Last Resort Grill (since 1992), Ted's Most Best, and a rotating cast of newer restaurants finding their footing. E Broad Street runs the commercial spine from campus to the eastern edge of downtown, lined with shops, restaurants, and the kind of foot traffic that keeps a neighborhood alive. W Washington Street is the music street, where the 40 Watt Club and Flicker Theatre and Bar carry on the tradition that produced R.E.M., The B-52s, and Widespread Panic.

The architecture is part of the appeal. A Downtown Athens Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, and the mix of Victorian commercial buildings, converted warehouses, and newer infill creates a streetscape with genuine character. The Georgia Theatre, rebuilt after a devastating 2009 fire, anchors the northern end of Lumpkin Street with its rooftop bar offering panoramic views of campus and downtown.

What makes downtown Athens different from other college town downtowns is the depth. This is not a strip of chain restaurants catering to students. The businesses here are overwhelmingly independent and locally owned, reflecting a community that has chosen to support its own. The result is a downtown that feels handmade rather than manufactured, where every block has a personality and every corner has a story.
