About Trial Gardens

The Trial Gardens at 1030 West Green Street in Athens, GA are part of the University of Georgia's horticultural research program and open to the public year round at no cost. The gardens test the newest varieties of annuals from top plant breeders worldwide and evaluate perennials to identify which plants thrive in the heat, humidity, and growing conditions of the Southeast. Planting occurs in mid to late April, with data collection beginning the first week of June. Plants are scored on a scale measuring flower production and growth vigor, with scores of 3 to 3.5 considered desirable and anything above 4.5 indicating exceptional performers. The result is a living laboratory that doubles as one of the most beautiful green spaces on the UGA campus. Visitors can walk through the gardens at any time of year to see which plants are excelling, gather landscaping inspiration, and learn about varieties suited to their own gardens. The gardens observe seasonal performance trends, with some plants excelling early in the season while others peak later in summer. With 71 reviews at 4.7 stars, the Trial Gardens are appreciated by gardeners, students, and casual visitors alike. For anyone in Athens, GA with an interest in horticulture, landscaping, or simply enjoying a beautiful outdoor space on campus, the Trial Gardens are a public treasure hidden in plain sight.
